Avaleen Gutierrez and her Lego Creations
Mom: Yasmeen Gutierrez
Synopsis: Based on Avaleen’s love of legos, starburst candies and gum-ball machines, Avaleen wanted to bring these three passions together. With her handy Genius Lego Inventions book, she found the perfect Lego invention that uses various Lego pieces to build a tabletop candy vending mechanism that can distribute starburst candy one piece at a time. The mechanism uses a gear rack, which is a gear that is spread out in a line as opposed to having the usual round shape. A gear rack allows the mechanism to convert circular motion into lateral (side-to-side) motion. Once the teeth of the internal gear connect with the gear rack, and as it turns, the gear rack slides forward pushing a piece of candy out of the candy machine!

Quote: “I like inventing because I like to make things. It makes me super duper happy! It’s hard to put things together, but the easiest part is coming up with new ideas.”
